Lost motivation? Try these tips to stay motivated!

Motivation is a powerful force and is different for everyone. If you feel like you’re losing motivation try these tips to stay on track.

  1. Have a look at your goals. These may be lifestyle, health or work related. Reassess these goals and look at the steps you need to take to achieving these goals. Keep in mind these goals don’t need to be life changers. They can be as simple as exercise 3 times a week or eat more vegetables throughout the day. That said if landing your dream job, completing the ultimate physical endurance event or travelling the world is a goal for you, write that down too and see how you can get there!

  2. Do some research. If you have been super into the gym and then slipped into not going for weeks, maybe it’s time for a change. Write down what you enjoy about exercise and start to research places that might be for you. Heaps of gyms do free sessions or a free week so you can try before you commit. If your goal is in another area, apply the same steps. Start to research what you need to do and where you can go to help you get to your goal.

  3. Find a friend or colleague who has the same goal to support you. Having someone you can turn to for advice and support in a certain area is always great. Family members can be great too but sometimes we rely heavily on family to support us in all areas of our life and working towards a specific goal might not be an area of focus or expertise for your family members.

  4. Get your partner on board. Sometimes we can fall into habits because we follow ours partners lead or because we don’t always feel we can express how important a goal is to us, as it makes us vulnerable. Let your partner know your goal and ask them to help you work towards it. If it’s meal or weight loss related ask your partner to help you cook healthy meals and snacks and see if they can handle less processed foods in the house. If it’s exercise, ask them to come to a group fitness class or go for a morning or nightly walk together. If work is where you need motivation, ask your partner how supportive they would be if you changed jobs, asked for a promotion or wanted to study in a new field.

  5. Remove the obstacles. Have a think about what might be making you lose motivation. It could be a current lifestyle, person in your life, current self image, fatigue or a feeling of not being yourself, sickness, boredom, something that is making you feel unhappy or a workplace stress. Once you can identify some possible reasons for your lack of motivation you can work towards seeing what you can change to help. Some things we can change easily like what we eat for dinner and others like our current job or where we live are much harder to change, but always remember there are professionals that you can seek out to give you guidance in all areas of your life.
